THE NEW ELECTORATES.

HOW TUB DIVISIONS WERE MADE-

Bletiods Adopted by the Com niissioncrs..

Wellington , , this day. The announcement of the new electoral divisions has set the political machine in full motion, and within the next few clays candidate 3 will begin to address the elec. tors in their respective districts. Yesterday I was able to send you a definition of the boundaries of all the electorates within the Auckland Provincial District. This information may be supplemented by giving the populations of the several districts, which are as follows:

Wide divergences are noticeable in the populations (/districts in different parts of the colony. From the explanation given by departmental inthoritities, it appears that the rule byVivhich the Commissioners were guided :ias as follows : The general quota for the whole colony was calculated at 7,05, or an actual population of 6,004 for coiilry and special districts (to which an alloffsnce of 18 per cent, was made ujider the Act), while the general quota was adKegecl. to in the towns and in boroughs with.populations of more than 2,000 each. Apijying to these figures the margin of 750, thi minimum for towns and large boroughsj|6,33s, and the maximum 7,530. Again, ji special and country districts, after alMng for both the IS per cent, concessionjind the "margin." the minimum is 5,369ind tlie maximum 6,640. By these arrnri|ments very extensive divergences are {remitted. Ifc will bo seen that thepopulatioiiif Ponsonby comes within three of the lnaxinum, while the Bay of islands, on the otier hand, is very little above the minimunjj • Wellington Divisions Condemned The f'Posfc" comemns the division of Wellington districts " very pretty work," and adds : " ItwbiJ be difficult to match it for utter disregaril for all the principles laid down for the| guidance in the Act tinder which they The new' district of' SouthlWflington and suburbs, which they have eyjjved, is.probably the most utterly akai|rdistrict. which, .was ever known in fche|olony. .A late.pork chop supper and aeifcre niehtmnre could only account for uifljng Kaiwarra. Johnsonville, Karbri and, Makara with the southern portion of tftcity." Payment to the Commissioners. The same criticises the alleged intention qf, to pay a fee of *200 each to tie Surveyor-General and Property Tax Conhissioners for their duties as representation commissioners. "They are," it saygfj , exceedingly well paid for their ordimry • duties, ■ and if Parliament had chi&n to deal with the subject' by a Select Committee, as was forijsly the practice, they would have had tosipply • data or information, and no onewaild hnve dreamed of making them any spejtd g V ant for doing so." The article concltife thus : "It will be a public scandal if airjsuch. fee as that mentioned is given, andj| shall not be surprised if the new House,fi-hen it comes to deal with the Estimates; i ps off from their ordinary salariea.for thenar a sum equal to any special fee the Gijyinment may give them. It is absurd total, about reducing members' honaria fora tr|| or four months'' session,'when a similar pjunt is criven to a couple of highly-salars officiafs for a job which has occupied f or i es3 than a month during ordinary '$$£ hours. The proposed payment of onahbdred guineas to the non-official the Connnissinn is also extravagant forj month's work. They should be content witi half of it "
