GARDENERS' HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Annual Meeting.

The fourth annual meeting of the above Society was held last night in the Newmarket Hall. The attendance was not very large. Mr Charles Hesketh presided, and after briefly introducing the business he called upon the Secretary to read the report and balance-sheet. Which was as follows --Your Committee cannot congratulate you on tho position oi. the Society for the past year, the subscriptions for the current year being less than those of the previous ones. There has been a great falling off in tho annual income, mainly due to the lack of interest in pacing members'tickets, there being a a™rence of £40, and a falling-oil in the door takings of about £10. The exhibits at the Spring show were very good ; pot plants and cut flowers were well represented especially roses, and vegetables were very line considering the season was somewhat late. The Autumn show was above the ordinary merit j pot plants, cut ilowers.and fruits of all descriptions, particularly grapes, were exceedingly admired, ihe camellia show was, as usual, a success, as far as exhibits go, and considering the bad State of the weather the door takings were fak, the sale at the conclusion of tho show being a great success. Your committeestate that, although there is not a large cash balance, as may be seen from tho bal-ance-sheet, theliabilitiesof tho society are not so bad; but they would recommend the continuance, and would advise great effort to be made by members to increase the number to 500, if possible. The Committee have to thank the numerous donors of special prizes, which have caused increased competition, and also the judges and stewards who so kindly lent their valuable time and assistance, and would appeal to all interested to use their best endeavour to work the Society to a credit balance clear of plant and stock of all descriptions by the end of the comingyear.
