The fire soon had a firm hold on the building and spread to the adjoining buildings occupied by Mr Augustus Barber running along Market-street and consuming the shops occupied by Falconer, cabinet-maker; Burns, saddler ; Healy, boot-shop ; Gallaway, draper; Adams, bootmaker. The offices of S. J. Macalister, commission agent, were pulled down, and this stopped the progress of the fire in that direction. Light nor'-wVstev!? winds fanned the flames across' the street, destroying the Colonial Bank, the Jubilee drapery warehouse, and the shops of Williams, bootmaker; Mckenzie, butcher; Tucker, stationer; Oldershaw, confectioner; Elson, druggist (No. 1 shop); Kingshead.. barber ; . Pigott, clothier ; Mullen, draper; Elson, druggist (No. 2 shop); Griffiths, auctioneer ; Macey, photographer ; Mason, watchmaker ; Scott, confectioner (gutted).. In Alfred street the Oddfellows Hall and two cottages were consumed. It is thought that the value of the property destroyed will amount to about L50,0Q0.
