SENTENCE- IN THE ARSON CASE.
Three Years' Penal Servitude. At the Supreme Court this afternoon, Violet Kate McPhee, who was found guilty of setting fire to furniture in a house in Victoria-street, was put in the dock for sentence. Evidence was called as to character by Mr Brassey. Mr James McKay, Civil Commissioner on the goldflalds at tbe Thames, James Maekie, coach-buildor, Alexander Barnett, pork butcher,- G. W. Uobson, restaurantkeeper, all of whom had known the prisoner, when Mrs Wardell, for many years, spoke highly of her character. Mr Brassey then made a forcible appeal to the Court on behalf of the prisoner, taking into consideration her present state. His Honor, in sentencing the prisoner to three years' penal servitude, said lib took into consideration her state and former good character. The full sentence of the law was 14 years.
