A LOVER'S REVENGE.

His Rival and Sweatheart Blown Up with an Infernal Machine.

Madrid has been very much interested in a remarkable criminal trial which has just closed, A physician of Archidana was engaged to a beautiful ,girl in his locality. The doctor was handsome and popular with the ladies. One day he changed his mind about marrying, and went away for a stay in Panada. While there he heard that his former betrothed was receiving attentions from one of his friends, a tax collector. Jealousy made his former love revive. As soon as he heard this news he returned to Archidana. He found the tax collector under his dulcina's window. The doctor at once disclosed himself and challenged his sweetheart to decide between her old lover and the tax collector. . She 1 chose the doctor, and the two were married within the shortest possible time, greatly to the injury of the discarded one. The marriage was happy and undisturbed. A year after a female child was born to them. Meanwhile the rejected lover had become apparently the most devoted of friends, One day, some six months ago, the neighbourhood was shocked by a terrible explosion. It was thought at first that it was a powder magazine, but it proved to be in the doctor's cottage. That morning a box had been received by the railroad express. It contained an infernal machine, and on opening the box the machine exploded, and both the doctor and his wife were killed. The crime was eiowly but directly traced to the tax collector, and a despatch from Madrid announces his condemnation to death.
