DESTRUCTIVE FLOODS.

Paeroa, this day. On Saturday last this district was visited by a perfect downpour of rain, which cul minated yesterday morning in the heaviest "fresh" seen in the Ohinemuri River for tho past 10 years. The river roso fully 20 feet above its ■normal height, and carried destruction before ib everywhere. About 2 a.m yesterday, the water invaded Mr Snodgrass's store and dwelling-house, covering the floor of both places to a depth of 2 feet 6 inches* and ,it will take ;. about L2,100t0 liquidate the damage sustained by the proprietor. Mr Firth's store was almost completely submerged, and about Ll5O worth of goods have been destroyed. Amongst other things that came to grief was a parcel containing about 50 books entitled "The Defenders of New Zealand " valued at two guineas each, and these are now worthless. . The county wharf narrowly escaped destruction, and everything stored thereon, comprising empty beer and spirit casks, firewood, timber, drays, etc., was washed down tho stream. It is stated that the contractors for'the formation of the line for the Thamos-Te Aroha Railway have lost about 20,000 feet of timber, which was stocked on the bank of the river, and a considerable friumber ,of > cattle and sheep have been drowned. So far I have not • been able to 'ascertain the extent of the damage done further inland, bub I believe it will not be extensive.
