THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
Yesterday affcernoon a preliminary meeting of gentlemen in favour of the formation of a political organisation to be called "The [Bible in Schools Association of Auckland," the object of which 3hould be to secure the daily reading, in the public schools of the
colony (with time table and conscience • clause); was held in the rooms of the Auckland Young Men's Christian Association. ' Letters apologising for absence from the taeeting and expressing hearty sympathy with the movement were received irom Messrs J. T. Garlick, Edmund Bell, and Dr. Kenderdine. Rev. J. S. Hill stated that he believed the programme oi tne ■ Association was in harmony with the views /of the great majority in the colony. The result of the poll of parents taken '«om& time ago in Otago, which resulted . |n a majority of about eight to one in- favour of the programme of the Association, was brought before the meetin?; with other information, tending to "how that the people of the whole colony desired such Scripture • reading. It was de•idedab once to form the Association, and a L tub-committee, consisting of the Rev. J: b. Hill, Messrs J. Douglas and J.
