Hodge, the manager of the Kapanga mine, is to be congratulated on having made a discovery of gold which is -of importance to the whole colony,-as giving; a fair promise to English investors of a return for the capital expended in working our gold-fields. Capfc. Hodge has sucoeeded in striking gold at 320 feet from the surface. The' reef is • strong and well defined, and the ground intact to tho surface. Leaving the beaten track of his predecessors, the manager very -judiciously worked in the i opposite direction to them, and struck very rich gold. Twentyfive pounds weight of stone will be -sent to London by the Mariposa mail steamer as ocular. . demonstration- of the fact that the gold in , the.:,mine is not by any means worked out. The specimens are worth from one to three ounces to the pound. Of great importance in connoction wibli this find is the fact that there is every promise that the gold will be found iii the reef when cut in the shaft'at the 600 ft doep. i ' . ■ Excellent Return from the Oafe. The manager "of the' Royal Oak has crushed the specimens and one and α-half tons general stuff obtained during the week from this mine, the result bearing 116 ozs. retorted gold. The stone was reduced at the Corby battery. This again shows the rich character of the Coromandel quartz. Adeline (Karangahake).—A crushing; of 22 tons of quartz at the Moanatairi battery produced 40ozs 3dwts.
