To-morrow being a general holiday, no business will be transacted at the Customshouse. A gentleman who leaves to-day for America, on his way to England, after a trip round the world, informs us thathe is much pleased with the system in voguo here of registering dogs. The plan of each lejjalised hound carrying his number on the collar is.worthy of introduction to the city of London, where some 13,000 stray dogs were killed last year by the police, and our informant, who is a personal friend of the Commissioner, believes, the system will be inaugurated in that city.

With regard to the troubles of John Casswell, who was dismissed from the Avondale Lunatia Asylum some time ago, a rumour has been current that Colonel Haultain has been instructed by Dr. McGregor to inquire into the state of affairs at the Asylum. Colonel Haultain, however, states that such is not the case. In his capacity of Official Inspector of Asylums he is quite prepared to make an inquiry if Casswell requests it, but he has not yet been asked to do so. If Casswell has conurunicated with the ' Government, it is probable ' that Colonel Haultain may even yet be instructed to make an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Casswell'a removal from his situation.

Making some inquiries .of some of fche "liners" who " are engaged —liko human spiders—in spinning fresh wire threads for.. telephonic purposes about our city, we have learnt a rather curious fact re the chief fault of tho New Zealand made "insulators " or eai-then.-ware affairs to which the wires are attached to the crosstrees of the telegraph posts. It seems that in pattern and otherwise they are as good as .the imported ones, but cannot be used largely, because they are not _ strong enough to stand the " larrikins." We learn that on a new line, the ... insulators become the of attack by means of rocks, catapults, and even guns, apparently of. every youth in the neighbourhood. The New Zealand insulators cannot stand a very heavy rock or a charge of shot, so they cannot be much used, our informant tells us. - J

i Shopkeepers boware! Spurious half sovej reigns are reported to be in circulation. The London Circus Company were again largely patronised on Saturday afternoon and evening,.and the interest and attention of the audience, as on previous occasions, was manifested by frequent applause. We may state for the'information1 of-those who have the iutention Of attending that tonight and to-morrow night a special change of programme will be presented. - The "Liverpool Steeplechase" is also in preparation for to-morrow evening, and should be the means of attracting a largo assemblage. .; .; ::: ;; ~:' A,
