VOLUNTEER NOTES.
Tee examination for Captains and subalterns in tho Volunteer force took place yesterday afternoon, when nine candidates presented themselves to be examined in the usual manner prior to being gazetted aa officers. The official Board of examiners consisted of Lieutenant-Colonel Shepherd, Colonel Dawaon, and Major Derrom, and the candidates were Lieutenants Fairs, and Hay, Gordon Rifles ; Lieutenant Moore, Auckland Naval Artillery; Lieutenant Duder, Devonport Navals; Lieutenant Storey, Te Awamutu Cavajry ; Lieutenant Ansell, " A " Battery Artillery ; Lieutenant Gilmore, "O" Battery Artillery; Lieutenant Steen, Auckland Veterans ; and Lieutenant Reid, Newton Rifles. These were all thoroughly examined in the theoretical portion of an officers ' acquirements and no doubt at some of the parades next week they will go through the practical test of their qualifications in handling the companies. The Artillery candidates have still ?omo further questions to answer in their deportment.
We learn to-day that a prominent member of the Opposition has sent several important communications to the Defence Minister relative to the arrest, of the officers of the Ponsonby Riflea by Lieutenant-Colonel Mahon. This step ia taken preparatory to bringing tho whole matter before tho House.
