Adelaide, January 20, The Orient mail steamer Chirnborazo arrived at 2 a tv, to-day. Passengers for , Auckland : —Mr J. Owen, Mies Owen, Mr I and Mrs Pritchard, Mr B. C. Heyeey, Mr Thompson, Mr Nelson, Mr Sylvester; and 73 in the second saloon. SUMMARY OF NEWS. London, December 17.—When Mr W. H. Smith unit Lord Randolph Churchill were at Vienna a new repeating rifle was brought under their notice, invented by Schulhorf, who is now on his way to England to supervise come ofiiciul trials. The weapon is extremely timple, holding 10 cartridges in a magazine which is refilled by the turn of the hand. It ia not liable to jam, and costs 15s lees than the Martini-Henry, The cartridges are half the w. ight. Tlio Arrest of Irish Leaders. Details of the arrest of Messrs. Dillon, O'Brien, Harris and Sheehy, which was announced by cable, are as follows:—Four Nationalists and members of Parliament, eince atre&toJ, attended a rent demonstration on Lord Clanricard'a estate at Loughrea, at which there waa a crowded and enthusiastic gathering of tenants. Dillon said the Government wished to make out tha1 he waa engaged in a criminal conspiracy ; but he would show it was not that, but that he was making an effjrt to save the people from destruction.. After the meeting the Nationalist tent offices opened. Just as Dillon was receiving rente, the police entered and seized the money, amounting to £88, together with documents, papers- : and books. The tenants fled, and a scuffle ensued. Dillon alleges that the poli'-e assaultedjhim. He was forthwith'ar- - rested. O'Brien was also collecting renta .;; when 'he waa arrested, but the money was | secured by other Nationalists, while O'Krien was resisting the arrest. Harris and Sheehy were then arrested amid. great excitement, and the attitude of the crowd being threatening, the prisoners were removed by armed police to the barracks. Dillon applied for a summons for assault against the Inspector of Police, but the.application was refused, as was also a demand for the restoration of the money. The defendants were cheered by crowds on leaving ! the Court, the town wes illuminated, and bands played.
