MINING.
Fmsii discovery of gold reported from the Lake district of Otago.
Nuggeta of gold have been found on Ste\vart!3 Island, and about twenty-five prospectors are now prospecting on the Murray River there in hope of finding a goldfield. It appears that a bard of miners have decided to work the alleged gold find at tho Wade. Various assays have been made by Messrs Galbraith, Fraser and Sons, and also at the Thames. In every instance trace* of gold were found sufficiently strong to warrant farther steps beirg taken. The gold ia very tine, and great trouble will, no doubt, be experienced in saving it. Apparently it is lodged in a species of blue cement, of which there is a plentiful supply. Old miners who have seen the stuff are of opinion that at some remote period this land has been the ted of a river, which volcanic agency has no doubt converted into =m;ill hills " A gang of' men have taken up a section of land. Tbo necessary dam, etc., has been-constructed, and they are now engipred erecting a small battery, sq that proceedings will qhortly he commanctd. That the party hf.ve full faith in the ultimate success of tha undertaking is evidenced from tho fact that they have refused overtures from persona anxious to join in the 1 speculation.
