Tiik Annual Show to day was well attended in spite of the choerloss weather, The country people were the mainstay of the Show, as they largely outnumbered the contingent from tho city Tho Onehunga Volunteer Band is doing its best to enliven the proceedings, by discoursing selections of inspiriting music. The athlotic sports are being carried out in the centre of the ground, and are engaging considerable attention from tho sterner sex. Yesterday the judging was not quite comploto and wo now append the awards declared to day: - Best Baker's Turnout,—Thomas King, Ist prize ;J. McNeil, 2nd prisSe. J. McNeil s driver, viz., H. Jackson, secured the prize for the best driving. The other competitors for tho turnout wero T. Davis, J. Gleeson, aud Martin. Daisy Produce.—The awards made to-day for buttor were as follows : Class 1. — For best 31bs Butter, in rolls, with salt. Mrs Crowo, Ist prize ; Mrs Huntor, 2nd prize ; Mrs Monison, highly commonded ; Mr Kedgate, commended.
Class 2 —Best 31b Buttor, with salt, in rolls, Mrs Crowe, Ist prizo; Mrs Kedgate, 2nd prizo; Thomas A. Dean, highly _ommonded ; A. Banar, commended.
Class 3 - Best Potted Butter, not lees than 2010, fit for exportation. Mrs Crow, Ist priz?. In tho absence of Mr Hesketh, Mr Tyer aclod as Judge, in company with tho othor two gontlemen appointed, Mr W. Stevens and Mr R. Robertson.
An oxhibit by Messrs Cousins and Atkin conclusively demonstrates tho fact that New Zealand timbers can bo most advantageously utilised in tho construction of carriages. It consists of ti-troe spokos, yokes, bar, whilllotreo, and shafts, and pohutakawa hubs. Tho firm bus experienced considerable dilHcUlty in obtaining regular supplies of local timbers, but this year thoy havo purchased no loss than 200 tons, and at tho prosent time have 30,000 ti-troo spokes and 6,000 naves in stock. Tho adaptability of ti tree for the etrongor portions of carriage work is shown by tho following extract from tho Admiralty roport, which gives tho respectivo strengths of tho timbors at present in use : American ash, 2039 ; English oak, 2 037 ; manuka or ti tree, 2.517. Messrs Cousin-, and Atkin doservo tho greatest credit for thoir persistent and successful efforts to utilise New Zealand timber in the construction of carriages. The vohicles by Goodwin and Dryland, of Otahuhu, aro also of Now Zealand woods with kauri panols, and lancowood shafts. Thoy are fitted up with no less than seven patents, recently taken out by Goodwin and Dryland.
