Oamaru, this day. Tiik woman Sorecnson, charged with the murdor of hor child, wa? brought before tho Bench yesterday, and remanded for a week. At the inciueat on tho remains of the child Arthur Tom-i deposed thut Sorgonson took a houeo from him and borrowed a tomahawk to chop some wood, and afterwards borrowed a spado. In answer to witness she said sho wanted the spade to bury some nighlsoil Either on the morning gbo borrowed the tomahawk, or tho morning bofore, when witness went out between fivo and six o'clock, ho saw Horgcnson coming from aoino outhouses, and whon phe saw him sho appcarod startled. Detective O'Brien called upon witness, and witness showed him whoro two holes had been made in the garden recently occupied by Sorgonson. He had previously spoken to Detective O'Brien about tho matter, f'eloctivo O'Brien wont on with the search, and witness wont to finish hid breakfast. A few minutes afterwards Det'ctivo O'Brien c died witnescs, and upon witnei-a going ho 8 i\v the remains of a child lying on the soil which had boon dug out. Some oiglit days previous to this nilnoss told Dotociivo O'Brion that there wove lorao very peculiar looking ar-hos in the fireplace in tho cottngo, nnd Detective O'Brien told him to coo tint they wero not disturbed
Kvidunc was givon as to prisoner hiving given birth to a female child in August last, but Dr. Garland could not determine tho sox of tho murdered child from the remains. Ho could not say what weapon was used to inflict tho wounds ; it might have boon a sharp spado or a tomahawk. A ppado and a tomahawk woro shown to Dr. Garland, and he said tho wounds might have boon inflicted with oittier, but he thought with tho spade The inquost stands adjourned till Wednesday next.
