Northcote Lawn Tennis Club and Public Gardens.
DuiilNG the past two years this Club has boen in existence it has beon labouring under great disadvantage in not having what misht bo termed a suitablo lawn, theso which tho members were accustomed 10 exercise upon being kindly lent by ono or two of tho residents' Under such circumstances it was only by tbe strenuous exerions of tho Committee that tho membership could bo kept together, but this year the Club will en'er upon a new era in is existence, a3 it now possesseß a leasehold which for lccility and pictureequo surroundings cannot be surpassed in the proviso* <f .Aucklatd. The Committee have secured from Messrs Osborne and McClyiront, th« proptietors of the new public gardens, called the "Be oh Gardor s," a portion of their extensive flat, aad have laid oft'a splendid lawn, available forthreo courts this season, whilo tho ground abutting thjreon is unifcrmly level, and om be extended at a very little cost. The lawn is surrounded on three sides by high ground, beautifully shaded by naive and other shrubs, while on the other there is a dcop fringe of titree und thon tho hard beach nnd sblnglo, upen ■which tbo wato-8 of tbe Waitctunta arc constantly rover' crating. Great attention has also beon paid lo the convenience of tbo players and visitors. A couple o! arbouw or pavilions are snugly ensconced amid the shrubs, which will ho available for tbo Club. Tbe Beach Garders a-o a new feature to the Northcote district, ard will prove a sourto ot pleasure to the many hundreds of citizens who on publio holidays, in fuct daily, aro found wendiDg or strolling about tho breezy high^ajs or rich fern gullios of
Biikeuhead und Northoote. The gardens are co v. niently and pleasantly situated at the head of the bay, aojicant to tho small hand brldgo that visitors and residents use in cro slcgfrom North cote to Bi kerhead; end at low tide, r und the beach, the gaid-ns can bereaohi d in 5 minutes from the wharf, while by the nam road iicroee tho iiat inabout7uiir.uteß. It will bo thus seen that tho speculation of Messrs Oibornn and MiClymrnt has given to Northcotc 1 nd district anolher attraction, and it in hoped that the immense quantity of strawberries that they huvo planted vill be tho moans, conjointly with tho natural beauty and site of their gardens, of drawing attention to the nismc* as a locality whero citizens can, in a few minutes, get beyond the working atmosphere of their business, and enjoy the salubrlouß and I hgalth-glviDg air of this maritime suburb.
