Mining in Shortland Streets.

At the meeting of the County Council last night voluminous correspondence wag received regarding the mining in Richmond and Hill-streets on block 127. Soveral letters were road from those who had pegged out claims and commenced mining operations, in which they roquestod the permission of the Council to continue work, and promisod to make good any damage that might be doae to the streets in consequence of the mining, to tho satisfaction, and, if neces sary, under the supervision, of the County Eoginsor. A petition was alao received from several of the reeidents, objocting tj tho streets being broken, an,l requesting that mining be at onco stopped. The osvners likewise opposed the streets being broken,' contending that the land for which applications were made to mine is included within the township of Shortland, but in accordance with His Honor the Superintendent's proclamation of April, ISGS, it Is exempt from gold-mining. This proclamation extends over the whole of block 27, including the portions now being used for streets. Considerable discussion ensued, in the courso of which various ingenious ways wcrj suggested of getting out of the difficulty, but it was ultimately decided that the whole of the Councillors, together with t: c r solicitor and engineer and tho residents of block 27, should visit the scene of mining operations this afternoon, and moot in the evening to definitely dotormino tho matter.

The County Council have decided to grant permission to miners to repair tho streets on block 27, as their solicitor advises them " that although they are the property of the Council, authority cannot be given by the Council to persons to mine in than. The resolution, howovor practically, moans that mining operations can be carried on in streets under tho supervision of the County Engineer. New Prince Imperial. — The crushing of 13 loads of quartz from the leader in the hangingwall of the big reef near western boundary produced 15ozs 1-ldwts of gold. Prospecting Operations,

A number of applications for aid to prospecting in various parts of gold fields were received at the meeting of the County Council last night, and wero ordered to be forwarded to tho Minister of Mines with a favourable recommendation.

Tin Creek.—Mr Clem Comes yesterday received a telegram from Auckland requeiting him to despatch with all possible speed another forty to fifty tons of the Tui ore, to be shipped Home. A large quantity is already at the station, and several teams are at work, so tho order should coon be executed.
