Victorian Early Closing.
A deputation from tho Shopkeepers' liarly Closing League waited on tho Chief Secretary Melbourne and presented a petition signed by 2,552 shopkeepers, praying for the repeal of the clause in thja Factories Act empowering municipal councils to fix the hours for clo.ing and advocating the compulsory closing ef all shops at 7 p.m. on five days of the week aud 10 p.m. on Saturdays. Mr Deakln, in replying, referred to the fact that the shopkeepers were nearly balanced by anothet section who were diametrically opposed to the present request, He would analyse the two counterpetitions and strike out the names of the shopkeepers exempt under the Art, and find the exact numbers either way, Considering the diviiion of opiniou, there was no hope of the introduction of an amending bd. this session.
