THE ROYAL ACADEMY.
The case against the Royal Academy is restated and enlarged in a long and vigorous letter to the "Times " by Holman Hunt. He regards the recent defenco made by the Academy as conclusive proof that it means to persist in ita old policy, und declares that it is now no longer a question of receiving and hanging a few pictures, more or less. He denounces the whole hia-
rory and policy of the Academy, and de. scribes how it first tried to crush, and then admitted successively Leighton, Millaia Brette, Marks, Burne, Jonoe, and nearly evory other Btrong young artist. He arraigns tho majority of the Academy as mediocrities who have persistently kent lione.t artists from thoir best work, enconraged incompetency, and appointed wealteachers in the Academy schools. He sum* up by saying that the Royal Academy, as now constituted, is a perpetual inlury to art. This letter is likely to bring the contioversy to a crisis.
