PATETERE ARBITRATION.
Thk important matters which for several months past have boon the subject of arbitration between tho various vendors of tho Patetere lands were, we are clad to be able to say, tinally settled yesterday. Tho basis of settlement has been that all parties accept both awards, Ncs. 1 and 2, of the arbitrators aa published, and fulfil tho same in all respects with the concession on the part of Mossrs Rich, William?, Wilson, and Walker as to the linglβ itDm on which award No. 1 was referred back by the Court to tho arbitrators to accept the decieion of tho Court on that item, viz., that the parties wero bound by tho admission which on grounds stated in their award the arbitrators set aside,, with an allowance for costs of £25.
As regards award No. '2, set aside by the Court, notice of appeal from the decision 01 tho court had been given, and under the compromise the award is accepted by all parties, but the amount reduced by one haif.
Award No. 1 contains nineteen separate affirmative decisions of the arbitrators on the various claims submitted, and one only of these was a motion founded against the award, whilst a very large number of claims were negatived or disallowed by the arbitrators. Award No. 2 was confirmed, and the single matter of claim in respect to Rotorua railway shares ; and in order to avoid the expense and delay of appeal, and in order to bring the many important issues involved in the arbitration to a conclusion, the compromise we have referred to has been agreed to by all parties. Mr J. Aitken Connell, the chairman of the arbitrators, was appointed by the deed of compromise settler of the award, and yesterday all the various balances woio paid and received by him, so that the awards aro now duly iulhllod and performed as modified by the compromise.
Altogether, the arbitration, both in connection with the Patetere proprietors inter se, and the previouss and more important arbitration botween the Whaiti, Kuruni, Patetere, and Rangitanuhu proprietors have occupied several months, and have necessarily involved very considerable expense.
