THE GREAT Sculling Sweepstakes.
(l<? CAULh-COPYRIGHT.) London, August 31. The second heats in the Sculling Sweepstakoe wero rowed today on the Thames over courses between Hammersmith and Kew, and Wandsworth and Hammersmith and resulted as follo.ws :,— FIRST. Beach j Bubear ... '" 2 SECOND, Teemer 1 Mattorson... 2 ~ . London, September 1. Bubear got the best of the start, but fouled Beach immediately after, getting away, and although the latter's right row lock was injured by the foul, he managed to win easily. Tho course.was between Wandsworth and Hammersmith. , The heat between Matterson and Teemer wae>rowed between Hammersmith and Kew. Matterson got away with a lead, taking Toemor'e wator, but the latter spurted and rowed Matterson down just below Barnes. Mattorson thon collapsed.
The great sculling event of the season is to be fought out between Beach, the Australian champion-, and the American oarsman, Teemer. In tho iirat heat Matterson beat Wallace Ross, Teenier beat Perkins, and, Beach boat Lee. lv. tho second heat Teemer has beaten Matterson and Beacli Bubear. The last big match by Teenier was against Wallace Koss in the United States and the: fpllowiug telogram- bearing date, Baltimore, July 19th ,is circulating in tho American press with respect to this contest. The result of the rowing races at Bay Ridge last week has caused considerable talk among the sporting fraternity, mid Teemer is openly charged with having sold out tho races in which he was defeated. It _ seems that. considerable money, was quietly bet and Teemer was favorite. He was heavily backed by sporting-men from Pittsburgh, who lost 4000 dollars on Friday' raco, which was won by .Koss, and it now leaks out that Teemer gave a friend 1500 dollars to bet on Koss. Teemer and Courtney rowed , togother yesterday and were tho favourites, but lloss aud Leo won, and to-night Courtney charges his mato with having intentionally pulled badly so as to como in second. .Gorinan, a Pitt.sburg man, was to have taken Teemor to England and there back him for the championship of tho world against Beach, but he now declares that ho will, have, nc.tb.ing tcrdo with his protege." There is however, usually a row, of this kind overall American sculling matches, and Teemer may have been dpioatcd on his merits then, although Lee and Wallace Ro=s seem to hayo been no wore in tho contest for tho championship.
