THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY FUNDS.
« — Mr C. C. McMillan, Honorary Treasurer of the Auckland Benevolent Society, to day receivod the following very gratifying letter :—" Shortland-street, September 1, 188 S. Doar sir,— Kindly accept the enclosed on behalf of tho Auckland Benevoent Society, from Alfred and myeelf, in affectionate memory of our lato dear father, — ioure very truly, Laurence D. Nathan." Tho enclosure consisted of a cheque for £100. This graceful act, so thoroughly in accord with the philanthropic spirit of the deceased gentleman v. hem it commemorates, is one deserving of all praise, and we truet to find it receiving from our wealthy citizens that imitation which is the sincereet flattery.
Two young lads named C. West and F. Parsons, who reside in the country, -went out and gathered 4s worth of gum, cold it, and sent us tho money in aid% of the one shilling subscription hind. These boya have tho true spirit of benevolence. " J.S M." has also forwarded ue 5a towards the fund, and the employes of Messrs J. and J. Dickey, ironmongers, Queenetreet, forward 4s. We have received 20s from J. W. D. towards the Star Shilling Subscription List,
