Tho following is the latest bottiag for tho sculling eweopstakes of 200aovs each, with 000 Eove added, which commoncos noxt week on tho Thames : —G to 4 against Beach, 100 to 30 against Tcoiner, 4 to 1 against Wallaco Roes, G to 1 against Neil Mattorson, 7 to 1 against Bubear and l'orkinti, 9 to 1 against Lee,
I From the abovo it will be seen that of tho names of thoso originally named as intonding competitors, t.vo are omitted, viz., Kemp and Gaiidaur. Tho former has withdrawn on the score of ill-health, and tho latter evidently has not considered it wiso to enter. Banian also " stands out," co that tho contest cannot be spoken of as being one in which " all tho greatest scullers of the world will take part." Seven .scullers having entorod for the race, tho whole of tho sweep money amounts to £1,900, including tho £500 added monoy : First prizo, £1,200; second prizo £400 ; third and fourth prizes, £150 each, Tho racing was to comraonce today, and tho first heat, Matterson v. Wallace Koss, has by this time been decided. Tho contest will continue on Auguht 31&t, and, if necessary, on Wednesday, BopLombor Ist, aa well. Tho final is to bo rowed over tho full championship course, from Putnoy Bridge to the ship at Mortlako, and tho contestants arc to bo in their boats ready to start an hour before high wator. William Beach objected to tho " champion of the world " being included in tho articles drawn up in connection with tho sweepstakos, and co the title will not go with tho first prize.
