Ottawa (Ont), July '27.—An aged aunt of Joseph Goderriau, o French Canadian, died Saturday, and last ovo ling eovoral frionda of the family gathered at Godorriau'a cottago to aympathieo with them in their bereavomont. Aftor a while tho mournoiß began to make merry, and a wild scone of hilarity ensued. A terrific thunder-storm arose, but none of the revelers noticed it. Finally a bolt came down the chimney. Tho'cofiin, which had boen placod close to the fireplaco, was ripped up aa clean as with a razor, the body waa ro duced almoßt to n cinder, whilo Eugene Gareau and F. X. Bauvin, who wore standing near, wero instantly killed. The rest of the party—somo six or soven in all—wore rendered insensible by the shock, and it una not until late this morning that any qf thorn recovered. Whon they staggered out and told the story to the neighbours it was hardly credited, but whon fully real-
ised the superstitions of the ignorant peasantry were aroused, and not one would go near the houso.
