FOOTBALL.

Tim idea of playing last Saturday was absurd, and ovory ono of tho matches should have beon postponed. This waa vory wisoly dono in tho case of the Representatives and Probables, for, if we judgo by tho turn-out of the previous Saturday, very fow would havo played. It was vory uufortunato, both for the " reps.'" practice and on account of the funds of the Benevolent Socioty, that it should havo turned out so wet. The ground was thoroughly saturated, and in some parts the water was quite half-a-footdeep. In spitoof all this', the Grafton II and Waitomata played, and the latter won aa thoy liked, The maroons made a good fight in tho first spell with only twelve mon, but tho second turri they caved in and gave the Waitomatas the match. We aro sure that both sides would havo been glad to postpone the game, as it was no day for playing, and it would hava dono the ground no harm to have given it a week's roat. As it ia, it will bo a long time before another match can bo pluyod on tho same spot, as tho turf is foarfully cut up It is to bo hoped that if wo havo another Saturday liko the last thero will be no play, as it doea no good, and is very likely to do tho players harm. It is no joke to say that a player might have been drowned during tho game, for if he had enco got down in the scrum in some places with his fellows on top of him it would have gone hard with him. The Waite matas' half back camo noar being in thia predicamont once, but managed to struggle to hi-i feot nftor having had hia faco under water for Borne seconds—and such water !

Tho Senior Cup matches start noxt Saturday. Ponsonby play Gordon ; Grafton, North Shore ; and Newton, Albert. Whon the matches wore discontinued tho records of each clnb stood aa follows : —

Tho Alberta aro not likoly to have tho services ol Marshall, their full back, any moro this season.

Charlio Harden, who waß renowned as a dodger when be went to tho Church of England Grammar School hero, has been picked to play hulf-back foi Chriatchurch against Dunodin this afternoon at Duncdin.

U. Daunt, who captained Tauranga Football Club this season, is now in Wellington. He plays for the Athletics, and has done some scoring for them. Bob Whiteside was presented, by the Ponsonby F.C. last Monday, with a splendid gold mountodstopwatcb, suitablyengraved. Tho presentation was made by Mr Cotter. McCausland is now permanently stationed in Auckland. Both the Gordon F. C. and the Gordon C. C. will bo thus considerably etrengtboned. The A. K. U. wore to unroll a handsome banner thia afternoon, prosented to tbem by tho lady admirers of football in Auckland. Tho Waitematas had ono unfurled laet Saturday, and the Gordon F. C. are to bo presented with ono this week in time for displaying it against Ponsonby. F. A. Twinatno, an old boy of the Church of England Grammar School, has been picked as ono of the Otago forwards in tho interprovincial match with Canterbury this afternoon. Ho played with tho crack Parnell junior team of 18S0 and ISSI, and was also for somo timo a momber of tho Albert F.C.

Ovor in Sydnoy tho University colours wero lowered by tho Arfomas whilo tho Gordons woro successful in defeating Newtown by 11 points to nil. This victory makes the Gordons tho premier club this

vVaitomata's victory over Grafton II once more placea tbem level with Ne'son, and the final match for the Cup between those clubs will bo looked forward to with a groat deal of interest. The following is the position of the clubs new : —

Notwithstanding tho boisterous state of the weather last Saturday, a full team of tho Gordon 111 journeyed to Ellorslic, and aucceeded in scoring a win against Montroao by 12 points to 9, the latter playing throe mon short. Oxford mot the Victoria in the Domain, and after a hardfought game, the latter claimed a win by 4 points to 2. Solwyn forfeited their match with Bxcolsior by failing to put in an appo 'ranee, and Britannia claim a win ovor West End for tho same reason. The pos eossion of tho cup now lies between Victoria and Britannia, tho latter being slightly the favouritos. Tho following are tho positions for tho cup:

A meeting of tho delegates of the Junior Association was held on Tuesday evening, to settle disputes in connection with tbo Oxford—Montrose, Gordon —Montroae, and Victoria—Oxford matches. In the firstmentionodcase.the protest was sustained, and tho match ordered to bo played over again. Montrose failed to sustain their protest against Gordon, and tho match was awarded to tho latter ; a similar fate attending Oxford in their protest against Victoria. Owing to the intercolonial match —Sydney v, Auckland—having been fixed to come off to-day, it was decided to postpone to-day's matches until the 11th September.
