Wife Desertion.—A. L. Reid waß charged with having deserted his wife.—On tho application of Sergeant Pratt, this case was remanded until Tuesday next.

At tho fortnightly meeting of the Trades and Labour Council last night (Mr J. Grant presiding) letters were road from Edwin Wood, W. Rhodes (Auckland Timber Company), and 11. Alley. Mr Edwin Wood was persuaded that the prevalent distress might havo been removed, or at least partially so, "if our mombers wore true honest Christian mon, working for thoir constituents instead of for themselves. " Had he the time at his disposal ho would oppose the member tor City West at tho next election. He suggested the calling by order of a* mass meeting of unemployed, the sending of invitations to every member of Parliament now in Auckland, as well as Mayor and Councillors, and the passing of resolutions urging the Government to find work for the unemployed, and to use the immigration vote for works of necessity. Mr Rhodes wrote about the necessity tor judicious expenditure of tho £6,SSI voted for Sfate Forests. Mr Alley requested the Conncil to give attention to tho Thames Valley lands as a field for settlement. Consideration of tho letters was postponed till next mooting,
