A CURIOUS FRAUD.
The Melbourne detectives have been busy for some time endeavouring to discover a man who 12 months ago perpetrated a clever fraud on tho Bank of New South Wales, Melbourne. It ia alleged (according to the "Argus") that some time about the middle of last year a letter of credit on the bank waa pent to a Mr John Dunn, addreased to tho Melbourne Poet Office. Tho letter was delivered inadvertently to a man who gave hie name as John Dunn, who had been staying at the Rose of Australia Hotel, King - street. This man presented the letter at tbe bank, and demanded cash for It, but was told that it would bo necessary to bring someone to idpntify biro. He brought Mr Enright, of the Rose of Auotralia Hotel, who testified that he knew him ac John Dunn, and the oaßli for the letter wan handed over to the man. The fact that the money had boen paid to the wrong man waa not diacovered until tbe senders of tho lottar ascertained that the person to whom it was addrecaod had died. An application was made for a return of the letter, but a roply was sent back to the efl'oot that it had beon honoured. The detectives who were communicated with havo found that the John Dunn who received the money was employed as a Btewori on an intercolonial steamer. It is expected that he ia still sompwher/o in tho colonieß.
