NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the above body was held laßt evening. Present : The Mayor, Cvi. Prime, Riggs, Laing, Gordon, Buckley, Hastings, Morrisson, and Billington.

Reports.—Cr. Billington reported,on behalf of tho Finance Committee, that it recommended as follows : — That Mr McCurty be appointed to attend the sittings of the Council, not to exceed 10 a year, at a remuner \tion of £5 per annum, also that the Town Clerk's salary be fixed at £80 per annum."—The report was adopted on the motion of the Mayor. Cox's Creek Bridge.—The Mayor moved: " That the vote of £100 for the erection of the bridge over Cox's Creek be rescinded." He stated that he had taken that action on account of finding that the persons most interested would not contributo towards tho sum required as voted. Ho had received a letter from the Minister of Public Works, stating that tho work would be authorised upon the sum of £110 being placed to tho credit of the Public Works Department.—Cr. Buckley seconded the motion, which was carried. —It was decided that intimation of tho rescinding of the vote be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, together with the reasons of the Council's change of decision.

Correspondence.—The letters received were dealt with as follows : —From E. Sperrey, Property Tax Commissioner, stat ing that he had placed ths sum of £177 18s, being 75 per cent, on tho amount collected, The Mayor stated that ho ha^ written demanding the full amount due to them as a borough : Resolved that a deputation consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Billington and Prime wait upon tho Colonial Treasurer to lay tho matter before him.— From tho Auckland Harbour Board, intimating that tho present bridge over Cox's Creek would not prevent tho rafting of timber up to the proposed wharf at tho sawmill : Letter received.—From the Socretary of St. Peter's Church, asking the Council to improve the road leading to the Church : Referred to Streets Committee.— From W. Johnson, asking for scoria on Roso Road : Reforrod to tho Streets Commifctoe. — From Dr. Purchas, reporting a case of typhoid fever in Great North Road. — From T. Soaman, Returning Officer, asking what, action ho waß to take in tho forthcominglicensineoloctions.—Tho Mayor explained that there was no hotel within the borough.— Cr. Gordon said ho did not think there was another borough in Now Zealand that could make such a statement. - The Mayor stated that he had replied to tho effect that tho ratepayers of Newton did not at present wish for any hotel in the borough.—lt was therefore decided to still continue, as before, connected with the Point Chevalier District.

Stupets Committee.-The Mayor reported that the Committee had met and recommended that tho levels of the streets in the borough be fixed and advertised. They wished as far as possible to make the works within the borough of a permanent oharactor. He moved tho adoption of the report, and also that a notice bo sent to the City Council to fix tho level of Ponsonby Road. — Tho motion was adopted,
