THE HERALD GAIRLOCH COLLISION.
Action to KocoVcr Heavy Damages.
\ It will be remembered that early in May last « collision took placo in Manukau Harbour between tho steamers Herald, owned _y Messrs Stone Rros., and Gairloch, ■owned by tho Northern Steamship Company. The usual inquiry was subsequently held by a nautical court. The Herald was eonaidered to have been at fault, and her master (Captain Savory) had his certificate suspended for threo months. In consequence of this judgment the Northern Steamship Company forwarded to Messors Stono, Bros, a bill of costs, which was considered exorbitant, and was nof acknowledged. Consequently, it has beon followed by an announcement that the Northern Company intend to institute proceedings in the Supreme Court to recover damages set out in the bill of costs. The total claim is for £1,366, and it includes the following items:—Repairs to Gairloch on account of damage sustained while in collision, £400 ; cost of bringing Gairloch from Manukau to Auckland for repairs, £80; returning Gairloch to Manukau, £S0; insurance on voyage from Manukau to Auckland, £137 ; insurance on return voyage, £137 ; loss Bu.tained during the month in which the Gairloch was luid up for repairs, £500. Messrs Stono Bros, havo intimated their intention to defend tho action, and the proceedings will be watched with considerable interest as affecting shipping mishaps generally.
