CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

New Warehouse for Coupland and Co,

Two handsome additions to tho city warehouses have just been completed in Cus-toms-street East for Mossrs Coupland and Co. and Buchanan nnd Co. Wo proposo to describe them in the order named. Messrs Coupland's warehouse is a handsome brick building, four .stories high-61ft from the road level. It occupies a ground space of 66ft x 50ft, and a back yard of the same size is walled in. The ground-floor apartments are 16ft high, and are divided by a light of way which runs through the premises. The building on tbe right hand is chiefly devoted to offices, nnd the balance to storage room. Tho other floors are intended for storage. They are all well supported, two brick divisions running from tho ground floor up to the third floor. Good ventilation and plenty of light havo been secured throughout, £-nd access is had to all parts of the premises by means of a staircase and by ono of Price's hydraulic lifts which runs from the cellar to the upj er story. Tbe front of the building is after a neat design. It has b. en cemented by Mr Blakey, but all other work connect; d with the warehouse has b en carried out under the supervision of Mr Joseph Bucroft, on behalf of the owners. Tho cost of consti action is about £4,C00. Mossrs Coupland and Co. will enter their new premises shortly, when it is expected their business will bo e:Jonded considerably, especially in connection with the shipping. This is another lino structure, adjoining that of Messrs Coupland and Co. It also is built of brick, four stories in height, and covers a ground space of 08ft 9in x 50ft, the yard behind being of similar dimensions. This warehouse is in many respects similar to the one wo have previously described. Two walls of brick run through the building in all four departments, and communication is secured by means of a pair of stairs running from cellar to the top floor, and also by a patent hydraulic lift. One-third of the ground floor is devoted to offices, and the remainder of the building is to be used for storage purposes, or probably some portion of it may bo let. The promises are well lighted and ornamental, tho front being cemented and worked in a neat design. The contractor is Mr Ellingham, and he seems to havo performed his work admirably. The cost of the building is about £5,000.
