Commercial Report.
London, April 18.—Consols have further advanced by* an eighth, and arc now at 97J ; Now Zealand securities remain at last quotation, and there are no changes to roport in colonial produce London Wool Sales. The March-April series of wool sMes closes today, the total quantity sold being 180^000 bales ; 42,000 are held over for next auctions. Prices generally cloßed a halfpenny to a penny lower, except for croasbreds, which have advanced by a halfpenny to a penny compared with closing rates of the January-February auctions. The third series of sales open on Juno 4. Now Stoamsr tor Victoria. (Received— April 20, 9.45 a.m.) London, April 19.—Tho new steamer Burrumbeet, built for Messrs Huddart and Parker, of Victoria, has made a trial trip, when a speed of thirteen knots wa3 attained. Degrees for Colonial Clergymen. The D.D. degree has boon conferred by the Usiveraity of Edinburgh on Roy. John Kinross, 8.A., principal of St. Andrew's College, Sydney, and Professor Salmond, of tho Otago University. An Opinion on Federation. The " Spectator," in an articlo on federation, considers that the right of secession held by a colony would override any past decisions of a Federal Council, and would be fatal to federation. A Hurderer Sentenced to Doatli. Melbourne, April IS.—The trial of the convict Barnes for the murder of tho late Mr J. B. Slack concluded today. Tho prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to death. Mauritius Sugar Report. Adelaide, April 18.—Mauritius advices aye to hand, dated April 20. Mcssra Ire[and, Fraser, and Co.'s circular gives the mouth's engagements for Christchurch at 200 tons, and Dunedin tho same amount. Freights to Australia rate at 30a to 335. The sugar crop has been to a largo extent improved by the recent rains. Tho stock of sugar in hand if 25.C00 tons, and the exports this season to New Zealand amount to 7,000.
