LAMONT'S GOLD SAVING PROCESS.
Mn A. Saundku., and ifovernl gentlemen interested in niininc matters, mot Mr Gordon, Govornmont Inspector of goldliolds, who has just returned from Australia, after having inspected all the goldlields there, and made himself familiar with tho most rccont and scientific appliances for gold saving. Mr Gordon has made a most caroful study of the water jacket furnaces now coming into such general uso in tho Australian colonies, and he seemed very well satisfied with tho rosults ho saw. Ho said thero was no doubt that the Lamont furnace saved fully 95 per cent, of gold as against the bank assay. Ho also showed tho gentlemen present a plan of the furnace, and thoroughly explained the whole operation. Tho furnaces aro, of course, kept going continually, and a complete plant, including buildings aud all appliances capable of reducing sixty tonsof ore per day, couldbeorectodforsmeltingunder£s,ooo, the furnace itsolf not costing more than £700 to £800. As Mr Lamont has promisod to roturn to Auckland in three weeks with a view to float a company to erect and work the furnaces, it is most earnestly to bo hoped that the Thamos goldfield may before many months has passod, have one or more of these furnaces in full blast, and judging by the practical results of those now in operation in Australia, this proocss should do much to revive the gold mining industry, and will probably convert property that is now valueless into dividend paying mines. This has been tho result at gunny Corner, and there seems no reason why the same results may not be obtained here, for these furnaces seem to have long passed from tho experimental phase, and are now the means of producing fat dividends. The Sunny Corner is a case in point. Before Lamont's furnace was erected, this property was absolutely unsaleable ; now the shares are quoted in the last Sydney lists at £3 5s to £3 15s, business done, and, we believe, only 12s 6d paid up. It is under 2onsiderstion to send a parcel of about ton tons of Cambria stone to Sydney, samples having previously been tested, with the object of putting the new process to a practical trial, before [the public are asked to embark in the Company necessary for the introduction of the process into New Zealand.
