BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The wetkly meeting of the above body was held last Friday afternoon, Mr S. Luke (Chairman) presiding. Mr Theo. Cooper was appointed a visiting member to the Girls' High School wcc|Professor Aldis, resigned. A lottor was roceived from the Education Department intimating that the Government had decidod to distribute £50,000 out of the School Buildings vote amongst the Beveral Education Boards in proportion to tho population, the same as List year, and stating that the Auckland Board's share would bo £9,082. It was resolved to hold a Bpocial meeting on Tuesday next, at 3 p.m., for the purpose of arranging for the judicious expenditure of the vote in question, A lottor was received from Mr Maxwell, General Manager of Railways, stating that a regulation in regard to free school tickets was gazetted to come into forco on the 19th mat. The regulation was to the effect that aecond-olass quarterly tickets might be issued upon the schoolmaster's cortiheate to school children not over 14 years of ago attending the Government primary schools, subject to tho condition that there was no primary school in the vicinity. This matter also was postponed for consideration till Tuesday next; A circular from tho Education Department invited the Board's attention to tho great necessity of including in the programme of the secondary schools as much instruction as possible in subjects that have a direct bearing upon the technical arts of modern lifo. Endowments and other public aid had been bestowed on Grammar and High Schools to enable them to supply to all classes, and not to the professional classes only, a course of study preparatory to tho more direct and immediate training for special careers. The secondary schools should therefore bo prepared to supplement the primary schools, and to carry on pupils trained in them to higher studies. Something should bo dons to create a bias towards industries, andtheschooUof thecolony might do good service by taking up suoh subjects as geometrical and mechanical drawing, and the handling of tools as well as physics and chemistry. Good work might also be done by holding, for a few months in each year, evening classes, in which apprentices and others might have an opportunity of getting sound instruction in drawing and other subjects connected with their businesses or trades, Tho Chairman remarked that to Borne extent the Board had already mado provision for the objects specified. The circular was referred to the visiting Committee of the Girl's High School. A letter was received from A. Hosking, ex-School 'Committeomen for Euapuke, reporting that the meeting of householders had lapsed, and that consequently no committee was elected. Another letter was received from Wm, Johnstone, ex-school teacher, stating that the meeting had been held, and a committee elected, the names ef tho members being appended. It was resolved to inquire into the matter. An application for water supply from Ponsonby was granted. Miss Woodward was appointed assistant mistress at Onehunga. Tho committee appointed to consider the question of bankruptcy of Mr Peacocke, assistant inspector, did not bring up its report, as Mr Peacocke had only that morning furnished a statement of his financial dealings during the past two years. It was assenting to the inquiry as Mr Peacocke, had stated that he had not been living extravagantly. Mr J. J. Roach, clerk, applied for an increase of hie salary of £200. An increase of £25 was made. Various other matters where disposed of, and the meeting adjourned.
