FURTHER CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

Extension of London and Harbour*

street*.

The project of extending London and Harbour-streets down to the beaoh at Freeman's Bay, so that when the reclamation of the Bay is undertaken Customs-street West may be carried on in s straight line to Cox's Crack, engaged attention at tho meeting of the City Council last night. It was raised by a recommendation from the Street* Committee that the declaration of the levels, of New-street and St. Mary's Road should be adjourned with a view to securing, if possible, the continuance of London-street through private property down to the beach.

In supporting the. recommendation, Cr. Crowthor, ac Chairman of tho Committee, pointed out that not only would tho suggosted extension obviate the necessity for costly excavations in New-street and St. Mary's Road, which would bo opposod to property-owners in the vicinity, but that tho junction of Customsstreet with the lower end of Ponsonby would bo a great improvement. In order that these negotiations might bo carried on, he would be prepared also to move the adjournment of tho levels of London-street when they oame up for consideration a fortnight hence.

Cr. Upton followed in a similar strain. The junction of London-street with Cus-toms-street would provide a direct thoroughfare from tbe oity nearly the whole way to Cox's Creek, and would benefit the whole city. It would make a roinarkable difference in the present facilities for traffic. The distance from the end of Harbour-street to tho side of Freeman's Bay —which, no doubt, would be filled up very shortly — was so small that there could be no doubt in the mind of any reasonable man that whether or not the owners of this private property were willing to give way when the Bay was filled up the Council would have to take it under the Public Works Act. There is reason for believing.howover.that the one or two large interests which were affected by this desirable improvement would fall in with the viows of the majority of the residents at the g roper time. It would be the duty of the ounciilors of the Ponsonby Ward to see this undertaking successfully carried out ; Cr. Cooper' thought that' in view of the impbrtence and public necessity of this work, I . P r }yate" P™Pferty in • dueetion*should be' aegulred withfini; further detyy. If the^ procrastinated, three 'or rfouf* buildints might bp erected upon ths. property by tho time they vanned'it.
