At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the Mayor presiding, it was decided to requisition Sir Julius Vogel to address a public meeting in Auckland. Wo hear that fish were very plentiful last Saturday in the harbour and surrounding waters. Several catches of 40 and 50 are reported, while an exceptionally fine haul of 86 schnapper and kawai was secured by a small party of North Shore ladies and gentlemen in the short space of two hours, in the channel opposite Lake Takapuna.

At the annual meeting of tho congregation of St. Peter's Church, Ocehunga, held on Friday evening last—Bey. W. E. Mulgan presiding—it was stated that the income for the past year, including £21 5s 9d special offertories for Home and Melanesian Missions and Pension Funds, amounted to £275, which had been all expended, leaving a small liability of about £10 over the available assets, The churchwardens and vestry wero re-appointed ; and a short and informal discuseion took place as to tho advisability of making all tho sittings free. It was resolved to urge the Borough Council to lose no time in providing a public cemetory, as the Church of England bury-ing-place was already over-crowded. At the Opera Houss last night, Dr. York delivered a lecture on " Individuality, Love and Marriage." The audience was tho largest that ne has yet addressed here, and and the lecture'waa both instructive and entertaining. The lecture was a lengthy one, lasting till nearly 10 o'efock, but the interest of the audience was sustained throughout, and at its conclusion Dr. York was greeted with hearty applause. Wm. Goorge Garrard has been quiescent fbr some time, but ho is once more on the warpath with a fresh grievance. This time it is tho Crimean Veterans Association that has jarred the popular rights champion. Mr Garrard states that having been through the Crimean campaign on one of Her Majesty's warships, he conceived himself entitled to bo enrolled among the "veterans," and accordingly on Friday night last he presented himself and tendered his subscription ; but was astounded by being refused admission to the charmed cir jle. He alleges that a number of other old Crimean warriors are kept out of the Society for no good reason, and he has propared a letter to His Excellency the Governor, who is its President, setting forth the circumstances, and praying for a full and searching inquiry.
