ACCIDENT TO PAEROA MAIL COACH.
On Monday last, an accidont of a serious nature occuned at the foot of the gorgo on tlie road to Paeroa. It appoarsthat Messrs Bradley and Co., on the day roferrodto, despatched their driver (Alf. Rowe) with the Thames mail shortly after 7 a.m., the conveyance used being a light four wheol trap, lately purchased for this traffic, and known as a (jortland waggon, to which were attached a pair of smart bay horses. There was ' only one passenger. All went well until. that part of the road was reached that lies right at the foot of the gorgo cloeo by Mr Brown's (fanner) houso. Hero thoro is a Very sharp turn, in a place whore the roafl is only some 10 foot wide ; on the left-hand side stands a high bank, whilst on tho opposite there is an almost perpendicular drop of somo ten or twelve feet on to tho bed of the crook. Thero is no protection whatever, no bank nor rail. It appears that just as tho vehiolo came round this corner one of tho horses suddenly shied at some object, and boforo tho driver had timo to inako an effort of any kind to avoid an accident, owing to tho extreme narrowness of the road, the whole turn-out wont over the bank, the two occupants being pitched right across the creek bed. One horso was killed and tho waggon considerably damaged, but tho driver aud passenger had a miraculous escape. Mr J. S. Buckland o ming up at the time, took on the mails to Paeroa, and wired Mr Bradley of what had occurred. Several alterations aro needed at this part of tha road to make it more snf&for traffic.—(" Te ArohaNewa.")
