It is understood that tKe Government have comnian.ica.ted with various District Railway Compahios as to whether thoy wished to enter iri'tb arrangement! for the leaeo and sale of their linos. As {regards tho ratepayers the Government' have taken a new departure. The Government have nttvv laid it down as a condition J that the ratepayers aro to' pay two-fiftlis of { the amount, for which proceedings are I being taken ogainst them. The Government stipulate that on the ratepayers paying* twofifths,' proceedings will be abandoned against them until Parliament determines whether or not 'to ratify. The agreements, it is stipulated, are to be framed on the cases of ratepayers being relieved of } further payments than two-fifths, ;andthe i 20 years for which they aro liablo is to commence from the first' payment. In': tho case of the IJotorua railway, the line not beipg opened, has cumbered it with difficulties about-the 'ratepayers. . In'the case of the Waimea railway, a condition is added that the line is to be at:tfnce worked in connection with the Government lines.
