An Electioneering Charge.
(To the Editor.)
Sin, —My attention having just been drawn to a ietter from Louis Coombo, I shall feol obliged if you will allow me spuco to reply to the charges therein unjustly made against Mr Peacock, candidate for Newton, and this company. Coombe, whilst in the employ of this company, had the misfortune tc loso one of his arms through his own neglect in not taking necessary precautions while at work among the machinery. The company gave him a gratuity of £50, and paid all tho expenses of his removal from Mercury Ray to the Hospital in Auckland, amounting to £10 more, which, considering the circumstances of the case, was very liberal. Upon his recovery he applied foremploymentas unginccr at the mill, but us such a position requires a man possessing all his faculties, and his former position being filled, the manager of the company could not comply with his requost. The Chairman, Mr Peacock, and the other directors, commiserating bis circumstances, recommended that he be given employment suited to his crippled condition, and he wus appointed time-keeper. He might have retained that position, but after somo months, presuming upon his infirmity, he grossly insulted the manager, and was dismissed in consequence, Coombes's statement that tho majority of the directors wished to reinstate him in his former position is tot-illy untrue. Tho above being tho actual facts of tho case.—l am, &c, Ben.i. Gilmer, Secretary Mercury Bay Timber Company (Limited). Fort Street, 12th July, ISS4.
