Proposal to Use It on the Qtioen-Htieet Wharf
l'lioi-OHAW havo repeatedly been made for illuminating tho Queen-street Wharf at night, with the electric light, but so fur no definite nction has been taken in the mutter. Ono of the Harbour Board Committees has now under its consideration the following oiler from Mr.l. Searing, stevedore, on the subject. The writer says:—" Herewith I beg to submit specifications mid prico fur furnishing your wharves with electric light, and respectfully solicit your consideration. In working large steamors at night it would be a great advantage for giving despatch, | and would greatly assist thoso employed in discharging cargo. Should you be disposed to entertain this, 1 am prepared, as agent to Messrs Muir and Muvor, to indent lor you direct, und plneo you upon host terms as to freight, Sec, und furnish you with full particulars as to working. 1 may mention that ono of the small wharf donkey-engines could drive n six -light machine " The following is theoitimutoof co*t appendedtotheletter :— Estimate for electric lighting plant of Auckland Harbour: One li unit dynamo electric machine, direct wound, constructed for arc lighting, with all the latest improvements, to run (! arc lumps of 2,000 candlepower, AM'-'ii: spare amaturo for same, £21 ; ti double ditl'erentiul automatic regulator electric urn lamps for outdoor use. t72 lis ; li globes, tli (i» : ">OO yards No. IS copper wire-double insulation, l2l> 5s ; ."00 yards No. 20 1!) strand cupper wire-cable insulation, £20 5s : one switch, lis; current indicator, iMlos: Total, 128.. lis. Packing the whole for shit)nent, £!."> los. Total, £29. lis. Six horse power nominal steam engine to run ti are lights, tl'.O ISs; packing for shipment, t.'l Is. Total, £!.'_ Ills. Eight horse [wwer nominal steam engine, to run 12 arc lights, £84 ; packing for shipment, t'4 Is. Total, £88 Is. The Committee will bring up a roport on tho proposal at the next mooting of the Harbour Board.
