MR MITCHELSON AND THE NORTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY.
Most people will be glad to hear that the Hon. E. Mitchelson has decided to inspect personally the various lines surveyed for the Taranaki-Auckland Railway. Writing from Wellington on March 11th, he informs us ("Northern Advocate") "that he expects to bo leaving there in a few weeks for Auckland, travelling overland by the various lines that have been surveyed for the Taranaki-Auckland Railway.' Mr Mitchelson shows his thoroughness of purposein anything he touches, and Auckland people generally will be delighted to find him taking this matter in hand in a determined and practical manner, especially now that a portion of tho Southern press are advocation no more borrowing, a cry which we interpret to mean that the colony should not borrow the million authorised for the Tara-naki-Auckland Railway. As our Southern friends ore prepared to make a great sacrifice, as exemplified in the agitation now going on in Canterbury re new railway tariff, the suggestion comes with exquisite taste from them.
