Colliery Explosi6n-Fifty Minors Killot'i
New York; March 14.—Telegrams to hand announce that an explosion which occurred in a coal mine at Pocahontas, Illinois, caused the death of fifty mincis. Tho V/ar in Toniuta.— Capture of Bacninh. , Paris, March 13.—Official despatches have been received from Tonquin announcing that the French troops have captured and occupied Bacninh. The city and outworks were held by a. strong force of Chinese regulars, besides local troops, but the French troops fully turned the positions, and after several hours' fighting, during which the Chineec suffered severely from tho fire of the French artillery, a general advance was made, and the Chinese-fled. Tho city and neighbouring forts are now occupied by the French troops. The despatches state that tho French loss was seventy.

London, March J3.~ Sir Dillon 8011, Mr Murray Smith, Sir Saul Samuel, and Mr Hemmant, h.-ve mot to consider the report of tho Western Pacific Commission, and the hostile attitude assumed by Sir A. Gordon to tho Australian ; Pacific . policy. Mr Hemmant urged that they should proceed to consider the report of tho Commission, which, ho considered, struck at the root of the policy approved of by the Australian colonies, and the meeting linally determined to await instructions from their respective Governments before taking any action.

In tho House of Commons Lord Edmund Fitzmauriee, Parliamentary Under-Secre-tary for Foreign Affairs, stated that the Government have not yet decided whether they will invite the Foreign Powers to cooperate in tho repression of outrages in the Pacific.
