BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The weekly ineoting was held this aftei'no«n. There woro present—Messrs Hobbs I chairman), S. Luke, W. F. Buckland, D. Goldio, Theo. Cooper, J. W. Core, Mr Moss. Chairman s Report.—This stated inter alia that tho following temporary arrangements ro teachers had been made:—Mr Walker, to Devonport school; Miss A. Tinling, from Opotiki to Newton East} Mies Nicholson has returned to Grafton Road school; temporary leave of absence had been granted to Misses Maud Nicholson, Emma Fielder, and Miss Horsley, Correction.— Mr Buckland pointed out that the Board had ruled that a contractor for school building or other works under the Board was not entitled to a seat on the Commit tae. Mongonci.—Tenders for school building were received as follows:—Thomas Wallace (accepted^, £340; Charles Harris, £35815s j YVm. Gillett, £3155. Engineer's estimate, £310. Mercuey Bat.—Tenders for teacher's dwelling were opened as follows; —W. Q, Smith (accepted), ±'395 ; Maunder and Boetock, £425; Furey, £474.—Engineer's estimate, £390,—Messrs Goldie and Buckland commented on the e>tene cost,if these buildings. Tho former gentleman mentioned that similar buildings on Surrey Hills estate were tendered for at from £130 to £150.—1t was suggested that the acceptance of the tender should bo deferred for inquiry, but this course was not adopted. Pabb Scholarship Difficulty. — The Chairman referred to this matter ( which had cropped up since he went away, and ■ lid that the boy Parr had called at their office yesterday, and was requested to come back this morning to see him. He did so, but thinking tho Board might prefer to flne3tion the lad, he (Mr Hobbs) told him to come back at three o'clock. He asked for a letter to the Chairman of tho Grammar School Board, in order that ho might be enrolled as a scholar. He had B3nt a letter to the Board not exactly respectful in tone. This morning ths following telegram had been received from the boy's father: — Thames. Chairman Education Board. Missed steamc* yesterdty. Delayed at Parawai School. Please get Board to await my information regarding scholarships and son's telegram. I shall sit you right. Mr Ccoper is astray in speech. lam not sati > fied with Secretary's explanation.— Reuben Pabb."—Mr Buckland suggested that the boy should be introduced and questioned, while Messrs Goldie and Cooper opposed this course, submitting that he should not be asked any questions while pig father was not there, while Mr Buckland held that the inference from this was that there was something to conceal.—Mr Cooper pointed out that there was one person under their control whom they sliGuldex^ amine, and that was Mr O'Donoghue.^On §he motion of Mr Cooper, it was unanimously agreed that the scholarship should be granted to the boy. Messrs Bucklaud, Cooper, and Luke thought a special meeting of the Board should bo held to hear Mr Parr's explanation, and investigate the matter.—lt was eventually agreed that Mr Parr bo informed that tha ordinary meeting, o£ the Board will bo held next Friday, when ho can submit a statomoot if lie go desires.
