ROWING CONTESTS.

Ponsonby Trial Fours Baeos.

The trial fours contests in connection with tho Ponsonby Rowing Club, for trophies valued at £0, eventuated on Saturday atternoon. Tho weather being iino and tho wind southerly, the conditions wore most favourable, although tho water might havo been a triHo less lumpy. Great excitoment was caused by each contest, both lady and gentlemen spectators participating in the Fooling of friendly rivalry. The courso was from Shelly Beach round tho yacht anchored off the City Baths, and back to tho beach. Mr Smith, Doputy Captain, started the first race, while tho otliors were sont away by Mr J. B. Morpoth, Captain. First Heat. A good start was effected. Cook's crew, rowing a rather fast stroke, forged a length ahead beforo the buoy was reached, but then made a bad turn. Morpoth*s crew, which showed a long and steady stroke, rounded with the inside position, and eventually won by about a length. No. I.— H. D. Morpeth, stroke; J. B. Morpoth, 3; Leathain, 2; Goutts, bow 1 No. 2.—Cook, stroke ; Fogden, 3 ; T. Farquhar, 2; Kirk, bow 2 Second Heat. Miller's crow, which had the choico of boat and position, was. slightly tho favourite. Smith's boat got a slight advantage at starting, but this was recovored on tho way down, and at the buoy Miller's was leading by a quarter of a longth. Thoro was a foul in rounding, and Miller's boat lost four lengths in consequence. Part of this was regained on tho way homo, but Smith's crew got in a length and a-holf ahead. Moore led by a longth around tho buoy, and Edmonds's crew camo up and passed thoir opponents, eventually winning by three lengths. No. I.—Edmonds, stroke ; Stanford, 3 ; W. White, 2; Henderson, bow ... 1 No. 2.—Moore, stroke ; C. 11. White, 3; R. Witt, 2; Comyns, bow 2 Special Raco. This was a contest for now members, trophies valued at 30s being offorcd. AX though tho coinpotitors had never rowed together, they made a good show, two Wan? ganui men rowing stroko. Nicholson won tho toss for boat and position, and got away first, but was soon overtaken and passed by Comyns.
