BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The weekly meeting of the abovo Board took place on Friday last. Present: Messrs R. Laishley (Chairman), R. Hobbs, D. Goldio, W. F. Buekland, J. M. Clark (Mayor),- S. Luke, and D. H. McKenzie. Summary ok School Attendance.—The following summary of quarterly returns of school attendances for quarter ending 30th September, 1883, was submitted :—No. of schools, 21S; number on roll, 16,9C1, viz., 8,G71 males, and 8,290 females. Average attendance 13,122, viz., 0781 males, and 6,341 fomales. TheattendnncesfortheSeptember quarter of lastyear, were: Numberof schools, 211; number on roll, 10,029, viz., 8,353 males and 7,070 females; average attendance, 11,580, viz., 0,129 males and 5,457 females, thus showing increases in favour of the present year as follows: —Two additional schools; 932 additional names on roll, viz., 318 males and and 014 females; increase of 1,53G in the average attendance, viz., G52 males and SB4 females. Tho Secretary said this was tho first time for several yoars that the September returns had shown an increase in attendance.

District Scho_aßßl__ps.—The Secretary reported that 01 boys and 93 girls had entered for tho approaching competition for district scholarships, the various parts of the provincial district boing represented as follows:—Auckland City, 14 boys and 20 girls ; suburbs of Auckland. 22 boys arrd 25 j4rls ; South of Auckland, 12 boys and 19 girls; North of Auckland, 2 boys and (5 girls; Thames, 5 boys and 12 girls ; Waikato, 6 boys and 11 girls. AiURiMD.—In referenco to tho hitch that had taken place in this district concerning the opening of the new school, a deputation attended for tho purposo of supporting a proposition to establish half-time schools at tho old and new buildings.—Mr Goldio gave notieo of motion to rescind tho resolution of Juuo 26, with n view to reconsidering tho matter, tho prosont application in the meantime being referred to tho committeo.
