EMILY PLACE WORKS.

St. Paul's Vostry Rofuses the Two Sites Offered.

It would appear that a difficulty not altogether unexpected has arisen in connection with the Emily Place works, the Vestry of St Paul's refusing the sites offered in Alten ■ Road and Wa kefield-etrcet, and desiring the preselit site of the police barracks.;

The following letter on the subject wa»read at the meeting of the City Council last night ; —" St."Paul's Vestry, Auckland, September 25th, ISB3. P. A Philips, Esq., Town Clerk, Auckland: Dear Sir,—l have the honour, by the direction of St. Paul* Vestry, to acknowledge the receipt of your' letter of the l!)th inst. to tho Chairman of the vestry, offering on behalf of the City Council a site at the junction of AltenEoad and Symonds-strect, or one at the junctioa' ot Alexandra, AVakefield, and Symonds-" streetp, in exchango for that now occnpfed . by St. Paul's Church. In reply, lam in- v structed to inform you that neither of the sites offered by the City Council meets ivith the approval of the Vestry of St. Paol'i,; Also, that tho Vestry are prepared to accept' tho site upon which the present police Mrracks and armoury oro erected, together ; with tho vacant allotments adjoining.-/,;'■ have, &c, Alfred AsjiTok, Be* ... tary of St. Paul's. Vestry."-Ths: Mayor moved that the matter be «■ ferred to tho Finance Comnrittef.-~Cr. Crowther suggested that the settlement tf. tho matter might bo facilitated by th? Vestry of St.Paul's meeting the Committee. : —Cr. Harper approved of this idea, but Cr, Garratt opposed. He pointed out that th» vestry had no power, and that the question; was one for the Synod. He thought they had conceded enough to the Vestry, and he ,;. - thought they should go on with the work / and cut away, leaving St. Paul's on ti&'®fi. edge of the precipice.—Crs. Thompson and Phillipps supported Cr. Xrowther's idea, the latter suggesting that mutual concessions might be made, or the site might le returned to the Church people after ths cutting is made.—Cr. Field thought the> '~ proposed conference should be left to th* , discretion of tho Committeo.—Cr. Waddef thought that by deciding upon the':: conference at once they would save::. "\-. a, week's timo.—Cr. Devore said the- ; conference would be time thrown away. Mr Nelson said distinctly at the previous conference at the Harbour Board that they had no power, and that nothing they mightagree to would be binding.—Cr. AicKin ; : pointed out that, while any action must be *■ approved by the Synod, it would be done on the recommendation oi the Vestry.—The , Mayor px-omised to invite the Vestry" to attend the next meeting of the Financj Committee, and tho letter was referred to. that Committeo.
