SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
Boy Ran Ovor by a Spring Trap.
Alleged Careless Driving,
Shortly after one o'clock this afternoon, a little boy, named George Henry Busby, son of Mr Butby, Venetian blind manufacturer, was run over by a spring trap at the cornor of Durham-street. According to the statements of several eye-witnesses of the accident, young Busby was crossing Durhamstreot just opposite tho British Hotel, when suddenly a spring-trap owned by Mr William R. Smith, carrier, of Brighton, and driven by a youth about 13 years of uge, came sharply round tho corner from Queen-street. Tho horse knocked young Busby down, and one wheel went over his chest before the conveyance could bo stopped. Mr W. Percival picked up the boy and carried him into the British Hotel, whero he was laid on the table in tho Commercial - room and rendered as easy as possible with pillows. Mr Humphries, the proprietor, proved most attentive to the sutteror, and at the request of Dr. Murray Moore, who was speedily on tho scene, he gave the lad a slight stimulant, as ho seomed to bo in a very week condition. From examination, Dr. Mooro camo to the conclusion that at least two of tho boy's ribs on tho right side wero broken. Ho considered the case of a very serious nature. The boy's father was cent for and arrived very soon, when a stretcher was secured, and the unfortunate little fellow was carried on it to Mr Busby's privato rcsidonco in Knrangahapo Road. The boy lies in a very precarious condition, and we regret to say that tho hopes entertained for his recovory are not of so confident a character as wo could wish. Several gentlemen who observed the accident attribute it to most unpardonable carelessness on the part of tho lad who was driving. Captain Harrold, of Remuera, and Mr \V. Percival, both of whom wer« on tho spot, state that the trap cams round tho corner at a rogular trot, and knocked the boy down before ho could possibly get out of tho way. It In ft fact that a groat deal too much carolcss driving is from time to time witnessed in town, and it is really wonderful that more accidents do not occur from this very dangerous practice. In tho instance immediately under onr notico, it seems that a very flagrant case has occurred, and undoubtedly tho affair calls for a most searching investigation.
