An accident occurred about 11 o'clock tbis morning, at McArtliur and Co.'s new store in Elliott-street, whereby a married man named Samuel M. Smith (foreman for Mr J. J. Holland, bricklayer) had bis left forearm extensirely fractured. It seems that he bad been engaged iv fixing a block to a new iron crane that had been lot into tho brickwork, and this haying been accomplished, he prepared to take down the scaffolding. For tho purpose of knocking out the supporting wedges ho stepped i'rom tho ladder on to tho top of tho scaffold, ing and began te ply his hammer. Suddenly the wedge flew out and the whole staging gave way, precipitating Smith upon the rough scoria beneath. He fell heavily upon his left side, and when assistance was rendered bins it was ascertained .Hint ho had sustained some severe injury to tlie left arm. Ho wat accordingly taken with all possiblo expedition to Dr. Tenneut's chemist shop, but, unfortunately, that gentleman was cut .at the timo. A meejfeal gentleman happened to pass by soon afterwards, and •was asked to step in, but he declined, Dr. Hayntun, however, proved more complaisant. He readily responded _to the request for his attendance, examined the patient, and found him to bo suffering from a compound comminuted fracture of the left forearm, the bones projecting through the skin on both sjdes. He had also a severe incised wound on the left forehead. Dr. Bayntun bound the injured parts and ordered the man's removal to the Hospital whither he was at once taken. Tho broken arm was set there without .delay, and Smith was then conveyed to his "home in Vincent^treet. Injured fey a Leather-cutting Machine. An accident of a most painful nature befell Sir Matthew Moore, proprietor of a boot and shoe manufactory, in tho Theatre Buildings to-day. He was working a leather-cutting Press, when it became nocessury to readjust the knife. He attempted to do this without stopping the machine, but was not quick enough, and tho index fineer of his right hafld was caught and badly crushed. The sufferer was taken to the surgery of Dr, Tennant, and by that gentlemans directions he was removed to the Hospital, where the injured member was dressed by Br. Bone' apd placed in splints.. It will very probably require te he amputated.
