FARMING AT TE AROHA.

A most satisfactory report upon the im

provements effected on Messrs Grant and Foster's special settlement selection of 18 216 acres at Te Aroha has been laid before the Waste Lands Board by Mr C. 11. Hill, Crown Lands Ranger. It reads as follows:—"! have maile an inspection of

Messrs Grant and Foster's spoci-1 settlement, Te Aroha, and forward herewith forty-seven descriptive schedules, showing the nature and extent of the improvements effected by tho settlers. The number of adults enumerated in the soveral land orders is .'HI. lam informed by Mr E. T, Cox that all the persons (G4 adults) whose names are included in his land order havo arrived in Auckland. I am also informed by Mr (i. 0. Grant that all the persons whose mimes appear in the land orders have arrived in the Auckland provincial district I found 44 families residing on the laud selected by them ; there are also three families residing on the block who do not hold land orders, but were introduced by Messrs Grant and Foster. There havo been 47 dwellinghouses (45 being the required number) erected for the settlers, the estimated value bcin" £0,339. There have also been erected by tlie settlors in tho settlement several other dwelling-houses, a general store, an hotel (temperance) out offices, and various buildings; estimated value, £2,010, full details of which may be ascertained by a reference to the schedule accompanying this report. Tho area of land taken up by the settlers is 0,716a 2r 34p ; the area under cultivation, 2,581a 2r. Tbe latter includes 1,078 acres grass surface sown, fern land, common harrowed, grass surface sown, fern land, and land ploughed in fallow. The total values of improvements arc follows: —Land ploughed and in grass, £1,823 2s Gd: land disc harrowed, and grass, £93 15s ; land swamp, drained and grass, £004 10s ; land surface sown and in grass, £136 5s ; land ploughed and in fallow, £047 3s; land, other cultivations, £381 7s 6d; drainage works, £1,994 10s Gd ; fencing, £2,626 4s 3d ; dwelling houses, £0,339 ; other builelings, £2,040. Lands in Cultivation.—Grass ploughed, 729a; grass disc harrowed, 75a; grass swamp, 599a 2r; grass surface sown (common harrowed), 70a; grass surface sown (fern land), 146a1r; garden, 7a; potatoes, 17a ; turnips and oats, 30» ; orohard, Sa 2r ; nursery, Ga 2r ; rape, 20a ; forest trees planted, 5a ; lands ploughed in fallow, 861a 8r : total, 2,551a 2r. It was agreed by the Board to issue Crown grants to those who had complied with tho conditions so soon as receipts from Messrs Grant and Foster are produced.
