THE AUCKLAND LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

(To the Editor),

Sir,—l heard with very deep regret a few days ago that tha ladies who hare laboured amoogat the poor for so many years, and, like angeh of mercy, brought comfort to many sorrowful homes, are thinking of dissolving' their society. I look upon the .Ladies' Benevolent Sooicty as one of our noblest institutions. It will be a sad day for this rising city, where we must expect the poor to increase with our increase of population, if this society is allowed to Isipse. If funds are required, the ladies need not feel discouraged ; I ■am sure they have only _to make an appeal and they will meet with the generous response that always characterises our fellow-eititens in cases of this kind. One great advantage this society possesses over promiscuous giving, namely t the ladies pay personal visits, and, not only satisfy themselves that the cases are genuine, but they relieve their own sex more effectually, and with greater delicacy than we could do. I know the work of a society of this kind entails much self-sacritice, and is ofttimes thankless, but it is not without reward, for I am quite cure there is no pleasure in this werld equal to the pleasure of doing good. Sincerely hoping the ladiei will not grow weary of their noble work, I am, &c, J. M. Lekkox. Remuera, Deo. 16,1882.
