OUR LETTER-CARRIERS.
(To the Edi!or.)
Sic,—Thanks to "Cause and Effect" for bringing before the notice of the public the - unsuitabiehees of the clothing ■worn by our letter-carriers in the present hot wfa'ker. 'I ho Post (ilEce. authorities can have no groat regard for the comfort ct these con- ■ stantly toiling oflicia's when they overlook tho aosoluto, necessity ot providing them ";■ ■with iiglit clothing during the summer months, us is done in a'l other warm climates of tho .Uritisn Empire. This species of inhumanity—for inhumanity it really is—arises, no. doubt, from the olfioe of Postuiaster-General bejng. from time to time, assigned to men of circumscribed capacity, whoso knowledge of the proper management of such an important department of tho public service as the Post-oificc is now considered to be, is admittedly inadequate, Th6"cffete Ministerial notion that any ordinary penoa is fit enough to hold the portfolio of the Post-master-General, is a most fallacious one, ~ and the soonor it is exploded the better. In other colonies, men of ability, foresight, and progressive proclivities-who do not require to be at the entire msrey of their subordinate*—p-cside over postal affairs; and why should similar affair* ' ' m New Zcalaud be entrusted to men lacking these esseutial qualifications, ia unaccountably strange, Tiia vront of it with our letter' carriers is, tbat they have to. wear their uniforms for a period of two year?, which niggardliness necessitates no small care and economy on their part in preserving and mending their "regimentals." As the duties performed by the carriers are of such a public character, our citizens would do well to stir up the Post- ; master-General to supply suitable clothing to those hard-working men, as well as togive them bettor pay, for some of them re* p coive only a starving salary of £80 a-year. —Yours, &c, ■ A CIIIZEN Auckland, Dec. 12,1582,
