HuUSE BURNED,
The house of Jacobson, a labourer at Maurlcevillo, has been burned down, and eveiything destroyed, There was no insurance. MR ARCHIBALD FORBES. I Mr Forbes opened last night to an cxc Ilent house, although the weather was most unfavourable, rain falliug heavily. It is propo ed to entertain Mr Archibald Forbes at a public banguct on Saturday evening. There has recently been erected in Karoii cemetery a handsome monument in Scotch granite in memory of tho late l»r. Skac, Inspector of Lunatic ■**ylutns. The monument, which is in the shupe of a runic cross, was scut out from Home. ■ It bears a timplc inscription to tho eit'cct tbat it is in token of ahVctiouato remembrance by deceased's friends in the Old Couutry.

Fur t"n senior scholarships there are twenty-three competitors; fur six junior, forty-eight. A number of tho patishionwa of the late Roy. W. Johnstone, for many years pastor ot the Presbyterian Church, Port Chalmers, have presented his widow with tho title doeds of a house and section costing £450.
On Saturday evening, as tho train from Invercargill to Dnnndin was passing across the Taicii Plains, an teroliic descended within about one hundred yards of it. There was a flash and an explosion, the latter sounding ns if fifty thousand rides had all gono off at ooce. The passengers congratulated themselves that the vhitor from space fell clear of the train.
